If you’re looking to get outside and officially enter your ‘running era’, the first thing you’ll need is a good running watch. I can recommend the Garmin Forerunner 165, especially at this price.

Right now for Memorial Day, the standard Garmin Forerunner 165 has been discounted from $249.99 down to just $199.99 at Amazon, with a choice of either Black or White. The Music version, which allows you to upload your own running playlists onto the watch, is also down from $299.99 to just $249.99 at Amazon.

I called this model “a very good first running watch” in my Garmin Forerunner 165 review.

I said I was “pleased to see Garmin skewing cheaper with the price point, the battery lasts ages, and the screen is lovely to use.” Crucially, I also said “its features here to make it a very good buy for the price” — and now it’s cheaper than ever thanks to the Memorial Day sales.

Even though the Forerunner 170 has just been released (probably causing this price crash, to be honest) the 165 is still a recommended buy, especially when it’s as cheap as this.

It’ll monitor recovery too: when the sun’s strong, it’s easy for beginners to overdo it and underestimate their own efforts. The sun makes us sweat more and work harder when pounding pavements, and Garmin’s Body Battery score will still give users a steer on how long they need to rest until their next run, and it also has built-in hydration tracking to log water intake.
