Alphabet Oct. 28 reported third quarter (ended Sept. 30) Google subscriptions, platforms and devices revenue of almost $14.3 billion in revenue, up 11% from almost $12.9 billion in the previous-year period.
The business segment includes all of Alphabet’s major consumer revenue outside of legacy search advertising, such as YouTube Premium & Music, YouTube TV, Google Play Pass, Google Play Store, Android and Chrome operating systems, and hardware devices such as cellphones, watches, home security and ear buds, among others.
YouTube ad revenue increased 9.2% to $11.2 billion from $10. 2 billion last year.
YouTube viewership on TV screens now accounts for more than a third of YouTube’s total ad revenue. YouTube’s U.S. television market share hit nearly 16% in late Q3, roughly doubling the TV screen market share of major competitors like Netflix, according to Nielsen.
Chief financial officer Anat Ashkenazi highlighted that brand advertising was the single largest contributor to YouTube’s positive ad performance during the quarter.
And YouTube continues to cause headaches for legacy streamers.
While Netflix and Disney collectively spend upwards of $30 billion annually producing and licensing content, YouTube pays nothing upfront. Instead, it leverages a 55/45 ad-revenue split with more than 3 million independent creators who generate billions of hours of niche-targeted programming at zero capital expense to Google.
Elsewhere, Google search revenue increased almost 12% to $63.35 billion from $56.6 billion last year. Google network revenue remained the same at $7.45 billion from $7.35 billion.
