Finnish company Jolla has announced a new smartphone after a long hiatus from launching new models. It is called the Jolla Phone and is advertised by Jolla as an “independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone.”

Jolla says the Jolla Phone is a “real Linux phone” because it runs “actual Linux” on the inside, “not a pseudo-Linux.” But that’s at the core. From the user’s point of view, you get version 5 of the privacy-focused Sailfish OS, advertised as the “only European mobile operating system.”

After a long silence in X, @JollaHQ is back. And we’re bringing something Europe desperately needs.

Jolla also claims that with Sailfish OS, there’s “No tracking, no calling home, no hidden analytics.” And while it does support Android apps, you can fully de-Google your phone whenever you want.

Talking about the specs and features, the Jolla Phone is powered by a “high performant” MediaTek SoC and has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is expandable via a microSD card.

The Jolla Phone features a 6.36″ FullHD AMOLED display, which has a 390 ppi pixel density and is protected by Gorilla Glass. The smartphone sports a 50MP primary camera on the rear, joined by a 13MP ultrawide camera. The resolution of the selfie camera on the front is unknown.

Fueling the Jolla Phone is a 5,500 mAh user-replaceable battery. Its back cover is also replaceable, and Jolla will offer them in three colors – Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange.

Other highlights of the Jolla Phone include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, 5G connectivity, dual-SIM support, and a physical privacy switch to turn off the phone’s microphone, camera, Bluetooth, among other things. Moreover, the smartphone is “guaranteed for minimum 5 years” of OS support.

Jolla says technical specifications of the Jolla Phone are subject to final confirmation upon final payment and manufacturing, and minor alterations may apply. Why is that? Well, that’s because the Jolla Phone will only be produced if at least 2,000 units are pre-ordered by January 4, 2026. However, at the time of writing, Jolla has already received over 1,200 pre-orders.

If you are interested, you can pre-order a Jolla Phone with a down payment of €99 via the source at the end of this article. The smartphone is listed with a full price of €499, while the normal price will be between €599 and €699. Those who pre-order the Jolla Phone will receive a special edition back cover as a token of appreciation for their support.

The Finnish company has promised to refund backers the pre-order amount if it doesn’t reach 2,000 pre-orders before January 4, 2026. But since it has already crossed the 1,000 mark, chances are we will see the Jolla Phone entering production.
