Today Microsoft has announced that the 2025 update to Windows 11 has started to roll out. Commonly known as version 25H2 (because it’s meant to arrive in the second half of the year), it’s the annual feature update to Microsoft’s latest OS (the company used to issue two updates per year but has switched to only one a few years back).
The update will be delivered using “servicing technology”, Microsoft says, which is the same one used for the monthly updates. Availability today begins via a “controlled feature rollout” for devices that are running Windows 11 version 24H2, but initially only for those who turned on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle.

Microsoft is very careful with the rollout because there have been many problems in the past. The company says that if it detects that your device may have an issue like app or driver incompatibility, it will put a safeguard hold in place and won’t offer the update to you until that issue is resolved.
The rollout’s breadth will be expanded “over the next few months”, so this is definitely not something you read about today and get for sure within a few days. Microsoft says the new version of Windows 11 comes with “the latest features, security improvements” and provides you with “control”, whatever that’s supposed to mean.
