Apple is on the M4 chip right now, with the M5 expected at the end of this year, yet leaks have now shown the M6 and M7 are on their way.

That’s not all. Apple is also allegedly working on a new AI server farm processor that could turbo charge your Apple Intelligence experience.

According to a report by Bloomberg, from sources familiar with the situation, Apple is working on multiple chips intended for use in future iPad and Mac models.

The AI variant could be the most exciting though as this suggests Apple is going all in to make sure its Apple Intelligence is super powered enough to compete with the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Apple M6 and M7 chips

They may yet be a ways off but Apple is reportedly already working on these next generation of chips. Presumably this is all part of the move towards AI where the chips will need to work in a new way to keep up.

The M6 chip is codenamed Komodo while the M7 is being called Borneo. There is also reportedly a system-on-chip for Mac that’s being called Sotra.

Unfortunately, at this early stage, those names are all that is being given away and in Apple style that will likely have no meaning related to the chips themselves.

Apple AI server

Apple is also reportedly working on its own AI chip which could have as many as six times more CPU and GPU cores than the M3 Ultra.

This could be the chip that helps to super charge Apple Intelligence, while giving Apple more control over its AI future.

Of course Apple and AI has been in the news a lot of late with many varied reports about who it will partner with. It’s a fast moving set of changes and presumably Apple is covering a lot of bases.

Apple’s next major health bet could be an AI doctor

Apple’s efforts in the health segment are a class ahead of the competition. But more than just racing ahead with innovation, the company has taken a more holistic approach that focuses on deep collaboration with experts, thorough validation, and long-term collaboration with its user community on medical studies.
The new hearing aid facility on AirPods is one such fresh specimen of Apple’s efforts. Then you have features like fall detection, looking for signs of non-rhythmic heart activity, and more. The next big bet from Apple could be an AI agent that acts like a doctor and might arrive as early as next year.
“The initiative is called Project Mulberry, and it involves a completely revamped Health app plus a health coach. The service would be powered by a new AI agent that would replicate — at least to some extent — a real doctor,” says Bloomberg.

What to expect from an Apple AI coach?

The iPad doesn’t need AI, but Apple must fix something else

Top view of the rear shell on the 11th Gen iPad.

I just finished testing the new entry-level iPad, and so far, I am fairly impressed by the tablet. You can’t get a better value than this slate for $349. From the external hardware to the innards, there is hardly any alternative from the Android side that can deliver a superior experience.
This year, Apple delivered a couple of surprises, in addition to the expected chip upgrade. You now get twice the storage for the same ask, and the RAM has also been bumped up. In a nutshell, it’s faster, better at multi-tasking, and without any storage headaches, even if your budget is tight.
Apple, however, hasn’t fixed the software situation with iPadOS, which continues to bother with its fair share of quirks in tow. This year, however, the software gulf is even wider between the baseline iPad and every other tablet in Apple’s portfolio. Stage Manager has been the big differentiator so far, but in 2025, we have another deep chasm.

A good riddance with AI

Is the base iPad too popular to get Apple Intelligence?

iPad (2025) colors.

In an age where Apple is all about its AI powered Apple Intelligence, it seems odd that it hasn’t crammed it into the base model iPad (2025). Why that is may have now become clearer.

On the surface there’s the obvious hardware issue of the base iPad simply not packing enough punch to keep up with the AI. But Apple would have known this in advance, so it presumably chose to leave this model of iPad a little behind in terms of AI upgrades.
