This mattress arrived at our office the same way as countless others — for free and inside a tall cardboard box. To set it up, we dragged it into our bedroom, dumped out the contents, ripped off the plastic and watched as the bed unfurled and inflated. Since the bed has support coils, it took shape quicker than other mattresses.

Right out of the box, I half-expected this bed to resemble other low-cost options, but it surprised me. It appeared to be pretty decent quality, offering a nice soft feel on top of its quilted cover. When I hopped on the bed, it provided plenty of support for my body type — all in all, I could sleep on this bed with no problem.

Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress firmness and feel

What does the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress feel like?

When I laid on this mattress, I immediately thought it had a neutral hybrid feel. Similar to other popular hybrid beds online, like the Serta Classic or the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, this bed presents a generally accommodating level of comfort that should work for just about anyone. While this bed includes memory foam, it only adds light pressure relief — it lacks the deep, sink-in feel of a Tempur-Pedic.

Getting a hybrid bed with a neutral feel is always a safe choice for most sleepers. If you don’t exactly know what you’d prefer feel-wise in your next bed, you shouldn’t feel a bed like this to be off-putting in any way. Of course, if you prefer a more specific type of mattress, like dense memory foam options, this bed won’t fit that bill. However, look no further if you just want a cozy hybrid bed. The coils provide all body types with plenty of support, while the quilted cover offers plenty of neutral cushion on top.

How firm is the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress?

We’d place the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress in between a medium and a medium-firm on our scale. This slightly firmer, more supportive profile makes the bed most ideal for back, stomach and some combination sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper who enjoys sleeping on something that’s a tad firmer, it could also work for you. We’ve mainly tested the 12’’ rendition of the mattress, but if you want an even firmer version of the bed, you can go with the 10’’ model. Since it’s thinner and has fewer construction materials in its design, it’s also slightly more affordable. Unfortunately, there are no softer variations of this bed — it’s a pretty firm bed any way you slice it. But Avenco, as a brand, has a ton of other plush options that should provide pressure relief for strict side sleepers.

When it comes to mattress firmness, we can only test from a subjective viewpoint. But we now have a machine called the Mattress Smasher 9000 that objectively tests how soft or firm a mattress is. After pressing into the bed with a precise pressure gauge, it gave the Avenco Zone Hybrid a score of 6.6 out of 10 — slightly firmer than we thought the bed to be, but not by much.

This is a hybrid bed that has a combination of coils for support and various foams for comfort. It’s around 12’’ thick and made up of the following materials:

  1. On the bottom, it starts off with the bed’s main support system of individually wrapped coils. These coils are reinforced along the edges and are divided into separate zones to help mitigate nightly back pain.
  2. Then, you’ve got a high-density foam that acts as a transition layer between the coils, so you don’t feel them as much.
  3. Next is a layer of comfort foam that acts as another transition layer and adds some pressure relief to the bed.
  4. On top of that, the bed has a gel-infused memory foam layer to give it additional pressure relief near the actual sleeping surface.
  5. Pulling everything together is a soft, quilted cover that feels surprisingly comfortable. Usually, cheaper beds tend to feel a bit crusty on top — not so much the case with this particular mattress.

Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress performance

Motion isolation

This mattress deadens an average amount of cross-mattress movement, especially for a hybrid bed. Since the coils are wrapped and individually siloed, they help the mattress transfer less motion from side to side, but not as much as a dense memory foam option. If motion isolation is a top priority when it comes to you or your partner’s next bed, I’d definitely consider a memory foam mattress — those usually perform the best in this regard.

Edge-to-edge support

This mattress has reinforced coils on its edges and a very sturdy perimeter. Based on our testing, we found this bed to have really strong edges that don’t overly sag under pressure. If you tend to sleep close to the edges of your mattress at night, this mattress should be able to support you along its outer rims — and it goes without saying, no one should be falling off anytime soon.

Temperature

The Avenco Zone Hybrid sleeps around the temperature-neutral sweet spot. Even though the mattress is advertised to have “cooling elements” in its design, much of that is just marketing noise. However, I don’t anticipate this mattress heating up on you or your partner much, either. But if you’re looking for a mattress to help keep you and your partner sleeping cool, you can always check out our best cooling mattress for hot sleepers list.

Durability

Since this is a hybrid bed that has coils for support, it should prove to be more durable than your standard, all-foam mattress found online. Its coils should provide lots of support and durability for all body types: small, medium and even larger people. If you’re upwards of 300 pounds, you may require an ultra-durable-style hybrid bed. In that case, feel free to check out our Best Beds for Heavy People list.

Who is the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress best for?

avenca-mattress-2025-sleepers-dl-8.jpg
Dillon Lopez/CNET

While anyone could get by sleeping on this budget-friendly mattress, the Zone Hybrid from Avenco will most likely appeal to a select group of sleepers. Here’s who we think will get the most out of it.

Sleeping position

Since it’s between a medium and a medium-firm, this bed should mainly work best for primary back and stomach sleepers. If you’re a combination sleeper who prefers a firmer sleeping surface, it could also work for you. The mattress itself provides more support and rigidity on top instead of pressure relief, which could be a drawback for side sleepers and combination sleepers who are looking for a softer bed.

Body type

As mentioned, the construction of this bed makes it good for supporting all body types, including heavier people. If you’re an average-sized person or even someone who’s on the smaller side, you should find it supportive, but you could save more money by going the all-foam bed route — coil beds can be overkill for petite people.

Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress pricing

Size Measurements (inches) Price
Full 54×75 inches $1,033
Queen 60×80 inches $1,066
King 76×80 inches $1,366

Unfortunately, the 12’’ version of the bed is currently only available in three main sizes — hopefully, they’re able to restock those others soon. Even though the pricing listed here may seem high, keep in mind that this is before a discount is applied, which Avenco is quite generous with. After you apply one to the queen-size, you can expect to pay around $320 — that’s insanely affordable for a hybrid bed online these days.

Trial, shipping and warranty

Avenco backs this mattress with a pretty standard policy set. Its beds ship to you completely free, and once in your possession, you have a 100-night trial period to try them at home risk-free. If you happen not to like your Avenco mattress within that timeframe, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a 10-year warranty.

How does the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress compare to other mattresses?

Avenco Zone Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature

This mattress is similar to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature in many ways. Both are neutral hybrid beds that feel generally accommodating and supportive to a wide variety of sleeping styles. But the Brooklyn Bedding Signature is available in three different firmness profiles, while you’ve only got two to choose from with the Avenco Zone Hybrid. You can even pick it up with an optional comfort upgrade with a cooling cover, but this’ll cost you a lot more than the Avenco mattress by default. If budget is the deciding factor between these two, you’ll probably want to go the Avenco route.

Avenco Zone Hybrid vs. The Allswell

This comparison is a bit more tricky to make since these two beds are so similar. Both are neutral hybrid options, and both are between a medium and a medium-firm on our scale. Both are among the most affordable hybrid mattresses online nowadays, but technically, the Allswell gets the slight edge on downright affordability. It’s only $284 for a queen, and it’s still of pretty nice quality. One advantage of the Avenco Zone Hybrid is that you’ve got a couple of height options to choose from, which gives you a slight choice when it comes to firmness. At the end of the day, though, you’re still getting a super cheap mattress either way you go.

The final verdict

Considering how affordable this mattress is, I’m truly surprised by its overall quality. If you’ve only got a few hundred bucks to spend and are looking for a supportive hybrid mattress with a neutral feel that’s slightly firmer for back and stomach sleepers, you’d be hard-pressed to find a cheaper option.

You might like the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress if:

  • You want a supportive hybrid mattress
  • You want a slightly firmer bed
  • You want a bed available in two height profiles
  • You’re on a shoestring budget

You might not like the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress if:

  • You’re looking for an all-foam mattress
  • You prefer the feel of a dense memory foam mattress
  • You want a softer mattress for side sleeping
  • You’re willing to spend up for a more quality mattress

Since it has coils that respond to shape almost immediately, it should look and feel ready right out of the box, but it might feel even better to sleep on after giving it a full night to sit out and expand. Sometimes, hybrid beds that have coils inflate quicker overnight, but usually, all beds take some time to inflate post-unboxing.

You cannot technically remove the bed’s cover, so I strongly suggest spot-cleaning it if it gets dirty. Usually, soap and water on a rag or sponge do wonders for getting most stains out of mattress covers.

Generally speaking, the average lifespan of a bed is between seven to 10 years. Since the Avenco Zone Hybrid mattress does indeed have support coils, it should last most sleepers around that long, if not longer.
