Something strange is happening with Android TV remotes, and it's driving users crazy
Nov 4, 2026 — 2:41 AM ET

- Some Android TV users report that pressing Home on the TV remote now selects the top navigation bar instead of their favorite apps.
- Reports span NVIDIA Shield TV devices, while our own observations suggest the behavior varies across Android TV hardware.
- Google hasn’t explained the apparent change, and we’re asking readers to help establish how widespread it is.
There’s a special kind of frustration that comes from a button doing exactly what it says, just not what your fingers remember. For some Android TV owners, that button is Home, and a seemingly invisible change is sending their carefully rehearsed remote-control routines off-script.
The mystery began when Android Authority’s Stephen Schenck noticed something strange while using his XGIMI Aura projector and an older JBL Link Bar. Pressing Home no longer brought up the familiar row of favorite apps. Instead, it jumped to the Home tab in the navigation bar above.

That sounds harmless until muscle memory takes over. Anyone accustomed to hitting Home and tapping right to reach a favorite app could suddenly find themselves wandering into Apps, Live, or another section instead.
A September Reddit discussion describes the same surprise among several NVIDIA Shield TV owners. A second thread from October tells a similar story. One Shield owner, who normally uses Home to jump straight to TiviMate in their favorites, suddenly found themselves stranded in the upper navigation bar.
Attempts to restore the old behavior haven’t produced a reliable solution. Rebooting doesn’t help, though a user claims to have temporarily recovered the previous navigation by uninstalling Android TV Home updates, only for the problem to return.
We’re not seeing identical behavior everywhere
On a TCL Google TV running Android 14 with the March 2026 security patch, our testing still takes us to the favorites row, retaining the previously selected app. Pressing Home again, however, jumps straight to the upper navigation bar rather than selecting the leftmost favorite first.
That leaves several possibilities, including a launcher change, a limited experiment, or device-specific behavior. Google hasn’t publicly explained the apparent shift, and we can’t yet establish how widespread it is.
Now we need your help solving this remote-control mystery. Grab your Android TV or Google TV remote, press Home repeatedly, and tell us where the selection lands each time. Include your device model, software version, and whether this behavior recently changed. Maybe your observations could help us figure out exactly what’s happening.
