  • Xiaomi may be working on a wide-screen slab phone.
  • The phone is rumored to come with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
  • We’re unsure of the other details, but the same leaker previously claimed several wide phones from Chinese brands could arrive in 2027.

Wide foldables are incredibly popular — far more than we expected. That popularity may also be driven by growing demand for smaller, but not less powerful, phones, as well as the proven convenience wider screens offer over tall phones in terms of usability. This growing demand now appears to fuel the creation of a new category of phones: wide-screen slab phones.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is working on a slab phone with a wide screen, similar to the cover-screen dimensions of wide foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo. While the leaker doesn’t divulge any other details, they add that it could include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which is more common on folding phones.

The leaker doesn’t hint at the tentative display size, but it’s fairly reasonable to expect the said phone to be roughly the same size as the recently launched Xiaomi 18 Fold. The wide foldable, which strongly resembles the iPhone Duo, features a 5.38-inch cover screen with an aspect ratio close to 3:2.

Xiaomi isn’t the only Chinese brand exploring — or having executed — the idea. Before it, Huawei already launched the Pura X View, a wide-screen slab phone without the ability to fold. OPPO has also been rumored to be working on its own rendition of the concept, and its wide-screen phone could come with not one but two 200MP cameras.

Digital Chat Station had previously claimed that, apart from these, vivo and Honor are also in the race to launch a wide slab phone by 2027. The latter is likely to recreate a design similar to its former parent company, Huawei, as noted by the leaker in another post on Weibo.

Many of these first-gen devices may not make it out of China, but we can expect later versions to be available more widely.
