Xiaomi unveiled the XRING O1 on Thursday as its first in-house chipset for the Xiaomi 15S Pro, and details of the chipset have now surfaced online. It is a 3nm chip that is built using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) advanced N3E process technology, which was also used by Apple, MediaTek and Qualcomm for their own 3nm processors. The XRING O1 will be avalable on smartphones in China, and it features a 10-core CPU, a 6-core NPU, and a 16-core GPU.

XRING O1 Features 10-Core CPU and 6-Core NPU

A die shot of the new XRING O1 posted by user Kurnal (@Kurnalsalts) on X (formerly Twitter) gives us a closer look at the new chipset from Xiaomi (via Notebookcheck). According to the user, the new Xiaomi XRING O1 has a die area of 114.7 sq mm (10.8×10.6mm) and the components take up 109.5 sq mm of space.

As a result, Xiaomi’s 3nm SoC is as small as rival flagship chipsets, which are also built using TSMC’s N3E process technology. The die shot also reveals the layout of various components, including the CPU, GPU, and NPU cores on the new chip.

The new XRING O1 chip from Xiaomi is equipped with a 10-core CPU that comprises two Arm Cortex-X925 cores (3.9GHz), six Cortex-A725 cores (up to 3.4GHz), and two Cortex-A520 (1.8GHz) cores. It has a 16-core Arm Immortalis-G925 MP16 GPU and a 6-core NPU. The CPU and NPU are both equipped with a 16MB cache.

The die show also reveals that the XRING O1 will offer support for LPDDR5T RAM at 9,600Mbps. It also features a sensor hub and an unidentified encryption core. The chip doesn’t reveal the presence of a modem, which means that the Xiaomi 15S Pro will be equipped with another modem.

According to recent benchmark results for the XRING O1 suggested that the chip could offer performance that is on par with the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite from Qualcomm. It remains to be seen whether Xiaomi incorporates the XRING O1 chip on more smartphone models in the future.

Xiaomi 15s Pro will be launched in China on May 22 alongside the Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra tablet and Xiaomi YU7 SUV. As we wait for the formal reveal, Lu Weibing, Xiaomi Group partner and President, has teased the design and key specifications of the smartphone. The Xiaomi 15s Pro is teased to come with a periscope telephoto camera. The focal length for the telephoto lens appears to match that of the Xiaomi 15 Pro. The upcoming Xiaomi 15s Pro will run on Xiaomi’s in-house Xring O1 chipset.

In a recent video shared on Bilibili (via), Xiaomi’s President, Weibing, highlighted the presence of a periscope lens on the Xiaomi 15s Pro. Close-up shots of the phone reveal the oblong shape of a periscope lens, and internal images of the device’s mainboard show a dedicated cut-out for the periscope camera housing.

The Xiaomi 15s Pro is shown in a black shade in the video. It has a square-shaped camera module with Leica branding. It is seen with a triple rear camera setup located in the top left corner. The LED flash is placed outside the module.

Meanwhile, the inscription on the camera housing on the Xiaomi 15s Pro suggests a 120mm equivalent focal length for its telephoto lens, matching that of the Xiaomi 15 Pro. It also boasts a 14 mm ultra-wide-angle lens like the Xiaomi 15 Pro. The new phone is likely to provide f/1.44 and f/2.5 apertures for the primary and telephoto cameras, respectively. This suggests minimal hardware changes on the imaging front compared to the Xiaomi 15 Pro.

The Xiaomi 15s Pro is confirmed to ship with the XRing O1 chipset. Xiaomi’s self-developed CPU recently appeared on benchmarking platforms with its single-core and multi-core results nearly matching the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s results. The new 3nm chip has a 2+4+2+2 architecture with two prime CPU cores clocked at 3.90GHz, four cores capped at 3.40GHz, and two cores at 1.89GHz. The CPU also has two cores capped at 1.80GHz. The Xiaomi 15s Pro was spotted on Geekbench with Android 15 and 16GB of RAM.

The launch of Xiaomi 15s Pro will take place in China later today at 7:00pm (4:30pm IST). The Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra and Xiaomi YU7 SUV are also confirmed to be revealed at Xiaomi’s 15th anniversary event.

It has a hole-punch display and a squircle camera module arranged in the top left corner of the back panel. The camera island is seen with three sensors, an LED flash, and Leica branding. The volume rockers and the power button are placed on the left spine of the phone.

The alleged render indicates a dual-tone design for the Xiaomi 16. It has slightly rounded edges and narrow bezels on all sides. The USB Type-C port, speaker, and the SIM tray are said to be located on the bottom line.

Xiaomi 16 is said to launch in China in September alongside the Xiaomi 16 Pro. The phones are believed to be the first to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset. Qualcomm is expected to unveil the flagship chipset at the Snapdragon Summit in September this year.

The Xiaomi 16 is rumoured to have a compact form factor with a 6.32-inch flat display. It is tipped to run on the HyperOS 3 interface, based on Android 16. It could feature a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup.

As per past leaks, the battery capacity of the Xiaomi 16 will be around 7,000mAh. Xiaomi is rumoured to use the latest silicon-carbon (Si/C) technology in the Xiaomi 16 and Xiaomi 16 Pro.

China’s Xiaomi will launch its highly-anticipated YU7 electric sports utility vehicle on Thursday, as well as other products, such as a mobile chip developed by the company, it said.

Analysts have touted the YU7 as a challenger to Tesla’s best-selling Model Y in China, the world’s largest auto market, and Xiaomi had disappointed fans last month by not showcasing the car at the Shanghai autoshow.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder and CEO, said on his Weibo account on Monday that the YU7 will be launched at the event alongside other products, such as the Xring O1 mobile chip and new Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone.

Xiaomi began manufacturing EVs last year with the launch of the SU7 sedan after selling smartphones, household appliances and smart gadgets for most of its 15-year history. Since December, the SU7 sedan has outsold Tesla’s Model 3 on a monthly basis.

Analysts say it is still outselling, but the company’s orders for its SU7 sedan have fallen following a fatal accident in March involving an SU7.

Apart from EV rivalry, China’s smartphone market has intensified as competitors, including Huawei and Apple, leverage their own custom-designed chips to create tightly integrated ecosystems and enhance user experience.

In a separate Weibo post, Lei said Xiaomi had invested JPY 13.5 billion ($1.87 billion or roughly Rs. 15,984 crore) to self-develop its advanced mobile chip Xring O1 and that it planned to invest at least JPY 50 billion (roughly Rs. 4,27,354 crore) more in chip design over at least 10 years.

A Xiaomi representative told Reuters the JPY 50 billion (roughly Rs. 2,946 crore) investment timeline starts from 2025.

Xiaomi began designing chips in 2014 and launched its first mobile processor, the 28-nm Pengpai S1, in 2017, which debuted in the Xiaomi 5C smartphone.

The company later shifted its focus to less complex chips, including battery management and image chips because of “various setbacks,” Lei said. In 2021, however, the year it decided to start making cars, it also decided to start developing mobile phone chips again.

“Xiaomi has always had a chip dream because in order to become a great hard technology company, chips are a peak that must be climbed,” he said. “We will definitely go all out.”

Xiaomi 15 Ultra REVIEW back angled
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra (Image credit: Future | Alex Walker-Todd)

  • Xiaomi has revealed that its upcoming chipset is 3nm
  • That should put it in competition with the best smartphone chipsets from Apple and Qualcomm
  • This chipset is being fully unveiled on Thursday

Right now, the biggest names in smartphone chipsets are Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, and these are the only three firms that have so far made smartphone chipsets using a 3nm (nanometer) process. But now Xiaomi is about to announce a 3nm chipset of its own this week.

Posting on Weibo (via TechNode), Xiaomi’s CEO has revealed that its XRing 01 chipset will be fully unveiled on Thursday and that – excitingly – it uses a 3nm process.

As a general rule, the smaller the number there, the more powerful the chipset is, and being 3nm should put the XRing 01 in competition with the likes of the A18 Pro powering the iPhone 16 Pro series and the Snapdragon 8 Elite powering the Samsung Galaxy S25 line. In short, this should be an extremely powerful chipset.

Of course, we won’t know exactly how powerful until we’ve put it to the test, but early benchmarks spotted by leaker @UniverseIce suggest it could give the above chipsets a run for their money.

An affordable alternative

That could be a big deal, as it might allow Xiaomi to more affordably equip its phones with top-end chipsets – and there’s a chance those savings could be passed on to consumers.

In the unlikely event that the XRing 01 outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Elite then it would also be the most powerful chipset available to Android phones – and if Xiaomi keeps it exclusive to its own handsets then that could give the company a real edge.

Of course, even if it really is as powerful as benchmarks suggest, it may have issues, such as not being overly energy efficient. But either way, Xiaomi being the first mainland Chinese company to hit the 3nm benchmark is still a notable moment for smartphones.

We should have a clearer idea of its real-capabilities on Thursday, when Xiaomi fully details the chipset – and an even clearer idea once we’ve tested it for ourselves.
