Elgato's new teleprompter app follows your voice & doesn't need special hardware

Elgato's Virtual Prompter doesn't need special hardware, and follows your voice as you read, keeping scripts near your webcam during presentations, recordings, and video calls.

On Tuesday, Elgato announced Virtual Prompter, a new feature in Elgato Studio that turns your computer screen into a teleprompter without external hardware requirements. There are two modes that users can utilize: docked or floating.

Docked places the script in a strip along the top of your screen near your camera, perfect for maintaining eye contact while reading. Docked is free to use and has no time limits.

Floating lets users put scripts in a window they can move, resize, or take full screen on another display. It requires Virtual Prompter Pro.

Both modes have the same script-scrolling options: set your script to scroll at a set speed or follow your voice with Voice Sync. Voice Sync listens through the microphone, scrolls as you speak, and follows if you skip a line.

Users can write in Elgato Studio, paste text from elsewhere. They can also import documents, including Word, Markdown, and plain text files.

If you stream, a helpful chat mode shows Twitch, YouTube, or Kick chat in the same spot.

Virtual Prompter Pro costs $2.99 per month or $29.90 per year; you can also purchase a lifetime license for $49.99. However, Elgato Prompter and Prompter XL owners get free use while their hardware is connected.

Virtual Prompter is available for both Windows and Mac as part of Elgato Studio 2.0, available to download here. Mac users will need to run macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
