Apple Music gaining new Selfie Sing video karaoke mode

Apple Music gaining new Selfie Sing video karaoke mode

Starting in iOS 27.3, Apple Music users will be able to capture videos of themselves singing songs along to the lyrics thanks to a new Selfie Sing feature.

Apple is expanding its Apple Music feature set with more karaoke-like options. Apple Music Sing already let users turn down vocals and sing along with the highlighted lyrics, but a new mode brings them into the mix.

The Selfie Sing feature exists in the iOS 27.3 beta and was first shared by code sleuth Aaron Perris. While his video shows an Animoji, that isn't a feature of Selfie Sing, just an effort to avoid posting a video of himself singing.

Sorry, no official Animoji Karaoke here, but this does mean it's only one step away.

The feature is only available on iPhones even though the special Selfie Sing playlist will show up for anyone. An iPad Pro running iPadOS 27.3 doesn't provide an option to use the camera.

When a song is playing that works with Selfie Sing is playing on an iPhone running iOS 27.3, a new camera toggle will appear under the vocal audio volume control. Tapping this will take you into a video recording feature that only produces vertical video.

It also works with iPhone Duo's rear-camera-as-a-selfie-camera mode by moving the video capture to the outer display. This gives the user a chance to capture the video with the best cameras while still being able to see the on-screen lyrics.

Apple has tried to implement social media-friendly features like this before, but via the Clips app. Having it baked into Apple Music could prove to be a fun gimmick if it catches on among social media users.

However, like "slofies" there is a good chance this Selfie Sing feature falls to the background. It's a cute, if limited karaoke feature that once again feels more tailored for the pandemic era.
