Oppo Find X5 Pro: A powerful smartphone with few shortcomings

Oppo Find X5 Pro

Predominantly, the Oppo Find X5 Pro draws on premium hardware and a great camera setup. Many test results are outstanding, but there are some shortcomings. Ultimately, price will play an important role in a decision to purchase this phone.

Just a single SKU of the Find X5 Pro is currently available in Europe. Both the smaller 8/128 GB and the larger 12/512 GB storage capacity models are not for sale in Germany. Nor does the one with the faux leather back make its way across the border. This makes the decision easier as there is only the choice between two colour options – black and white. The 70 Euro cheaper model with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 will also not be available here for the time being, but this is not necessarily a bad thing, as it is equipped with different image stabilization and does not have a MariSilicon X co-processor.

The Oppo smartphone has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, which delivers a crisp QHD Plus resolution, is generally very true to colour but is not quite as bright as expected. The performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is very good, but although faster than its predecessor, it degrades noticeably under constant load. Minor compromises are required with the WLAN, as the 6 GHz band is not supported.

The camera leaves a generally strong impression. The two high-quality sensors offer good imaging performance from macro recording to ultra-wide angle to wide angle. Despite Hasselblad optimisation images can under some circumstances, however, be somewhat on the cold side. The zoom is also quite good, but some competitors do better, especially with longer focal lengths.

Although Oppo promises dual- to tri-band connectivity when locking onto satellites, this didn’t actually work when we tested it. It is quite possible that this will be remedied in a forthcoming update.

All in all, the Oppo Find X5 Pro is one of the best Android smartphones of 2022. With an RRP of 1,299 euros, for example at Amazon Germany, it doesn’t have to shy away from any price comparison. But that’s not exactly cheap.

As a child I was fascinated by my Commodore 16, and this sparked my enthusiasm for computers. Using my first modem, I surfed the BTX videotext system and later the World Wide Web. I have always been captivated by the latest technologies, and this is especially true for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. I’ve been part of the Notebookcheck team since 2013 and have also on occasion written for Notebookinfo.de, and I’m looking forward to testing new innovations for our readers. I like to spend my spare time indulging in photography and barbecues and being with my family.

I was born into an English American family in Berlin and attended Primary School in England and Secondary School and University in Vienna. I was bilingual from an early age and left Europe to live in Australia, and subsequently New Zealand. My early career with IBM was followed by years running my own small IT business ventures. My passion for technology is more about the impact it has on human behaviour rather than the gadgets themselves. Understanding the latter well is a prerequisite.
