These are the camera upgrades coming to the next iPhone generations

Apple has twice so far been rumored to explore a 200MP camera for upcoming iPhones. The first time it was supposedly going to be the main camera, and then, a few days ago, we heard about a 200MP telephoto camera that would only arrive in 2028.

Today a new leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo clears up some of the confusion. According to him, Apple will launch a big camera update every year starting with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this September.

Those two are getting the much-rumored variable aperture. Then, in 2027, the Pro models are allegedly going to come with a 200MP main camera using a 1/1.12″ type sensor, while in 2028 the 200MP periscope telephoto camera will be added too. So the 2028 iPhone Pros will have two 200MP cameras.

At some point either in 2027 or 2028 Apple will also add gimbal-like OIS for the ultrawide camera, apparently. So it’s looking like an interesting few years for the iPhone Pro line, but it is of course a shame that Apple is drip-feeding us new features like this.
