A blockbuster deal was struck in the streaming space last Friday as Netflix announced its plans to take over Warner Bros. to the tune of $83 billion. While that deal is expected to be finalized in the next 12-18 months, pending regulatory approval, US President Donald Trump is certain that he will have a say in the final decision.
Trump voiced his opinion prior to hosting the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony last night in Washington, DC, claiming “he’ll be involved in the decision” while also stating that “it’s a lot of market share, so we’ll have to see what happens”.
Netflix is the world’s most popular streaming service and already holds an estimated 22% market share of the US streaming service which places it tied for first place alongside Amazon’s Prime Video. HBO Max is just one spot behind with 14% of the US streaming market share. It remains to be seen how Netflix plans to integrate Warner Bros’ vast catalogue of movies and TV show franchises and if the two streaming services will be combined into one.
