We understand the $3,800 price tag is hefty for any watch, but G-Shock watch fans will already recognize the MRG name as Casio’s most luxurious and prestigious G-Shock series, and won’t be taken aback by the stunning Casio G-Shock MRG-B2100R-2A‘s cost. Here’s what makes it so special.
Based on the now iconic G-Shock B2100 series’s octagonal case shape, the MRG-B2100R-2A has a case made from specially hardened Ti64 titanium with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, a bezel from Casio’s own tough Cobarion material — an alloy four times harder than titanium according to the brand — and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal over the dial. As impressive as all this sounds, it’s the details that make this watch special.
The dial’s design is influenced by a Japanese art style called kigumi, and the latticework is a separate piece to the underside of the dial, where the solar panel lives. This intricate design allows plenty of light to pass through to fuel the watch, while still looking spectacular. The blue and gold colors used on the dial are inspired by Japanese calligraphy and ink paintings. There are 27 different components that make up the case and bezel, all conforming to the watch’s ultimate shock and water resistance, and the screw-down crown also works as a push button to access different features.
The solar power keeps both the watch and a Bluetooth connection working, where the watch connects to the Casio Watches app, making functions like the world time easier to set. If you don’t want to use the app, the MRG-B2100R-2A also has Casio’s Multi-Band 6 atomic timekeeping system, where it will automatically adjust to the local time after receiving radio tower signals. The watch is held on your wrist by a flourorubber strap and a ti-fold titanium clasp. The whole thing is assembled by hand at Casio’s prestigious Yamagata, Japan factory.
Casio’s MRG line is its most luxurious range and the attention to detail is amazing, as is the brand’s long-term commitment to using Japanese art forms as inspiration. Squeezing in solar power and Bluetooth brings the watch right up to date too, giving luxury watch fans an alternative to a pure mechanical experience. We went hands-on with the first MRG “square” watch, the MRG-B5000, and with the MRG-B2000 a while back to better understand what they’re like to own and wear.

The tech-boosted G-Shock GA-B2100 watch is a great buy
It can initially be quite hard to grasp why the little Casio G-Shock GA-B2100 is such a brilliant watch. After all, it’s cheap, it’s not a sci-fi-influenced limited edition, and on the technology side, it’s not as comprehensively specced as a fitness-orientated G-Shock, let alone an Apple Watch.
Yet it’s one of my favorite G-Shock watches of recent times, and a great buy. Here’s why.
Why is it popular?
The original G-Shock GA-2100 (note the lack of the B in its name) came out in 2019 and was an instant hit. The $99 price point was just right, the analog/digital look is pure G-Shock, and it was available in various colors so it appealed to the many people who buy G-Shock watches as fashion accessories. The passing (if you squint very hard) resemblance to the Audemars Piguet’s octagonal Royal Oak luxury watch helped build its legend online too.

Casio adds Bluetooth and solar to the hugely popular GA-2100
Don’t brush the new G-Shock GA-B2100 aside as just a collection of new colors, as this is a major update to the highly popular octagonal GA-2100 watch. Casio has added desirable tech in the form of Bluetooth connectivity and solar charging to give it high-tech appeal, and we predict that’s going to put this watch on a lot of wrists.
The Bluetooth connectivity enables the watch to sync with the Casio Watches app, where adjusting the time happens automatically and you can set alarms and timers too. It’s also simple to add a location for the world time, plus there’s a phone finder feature too. While the GA-B2100 isn’t going to challenge the Apple Watch for functionality, it does make using simple features easier and faster.

G-Shock’s red-and-gold MR-G watch makes a strong statement
Luxury smartwatches aren’t especially common, but if you are a fan of a luxury connected watch, there are more options, especially if you consider Casio’s G-Shock range. The company has released two new entries in its MR-G lineup, the MRG-B5000B and the MRG-B2000B.
Unlike the all-digital B5000, the MRG-B2000B. is an analog watch, but it still has a Bluetooth connection to make setting up and using common features a little easier than just with the buttons. I’ve been wearing the watch with its hand-finished titanium case, and boy, does it make a statement.
Luxury materials, tough features
The MRG-2000B is based on the MTG-B2000. The differences are in the materials used, the module inside the watch, and the way it’s built. G-Shock MR-G watches are built by hand at Casio’s factory in Yamagata, Japan, and assembled by the company’s most qualified engineers. The module used is functionally the same as the MT-G model’s, but it’s made with gold-plated retainer plates to reduce electrical resistance.
