Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid Mattress Review 2025: Premium Memory Foam From a Reputable Brand Tested By Experts
First impressions of the Serta Perfect Sleeper X mattress
Dillon Payne/CNET

This bed arrived at our space with completely free shipping and was actually fully sized. All we had to do was tear away the packaging and the bed was ready for testing. Sometimes, with other bed-in-a-box options, you’ll have to give the bedtime to inflate, but that was not the case here.

The bed was ready to go right out of the packaging, so we immediately started testing it out. At first glance, I noticed that this is indeed a more premium style of hybrid mattress. Elements like its targeted Zoned-support design and the strikingly patterned cover definitely indicate that it’s a more luxurious offering. I was eager to hop on and test it out, but when I did, I was surprised by how firm it was and how I thought it felt.

Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress firmness and feel

What does the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress feel like?

Dillon Payne/CNET

Unexpectedly, I found this bed to have a dense memory foam feel. When I hopped on, I immediately thought the bed was pretty firm, but it started to slowly soften up as my body nestled into the top memory foam comfort layers. When I pressed into the bed and let go, I definitely observed a slow-to-respond quality.

This type of mattress feel isn’t right for everyone. You really either tend to love it or hate it. Being a combination sleeper, I’m not the biggest fan of dense memory foam options, but I know plenty of other people who can’t sleep on any other type of bed. If you’re the type of sleeper who likes to hang out in one main sleeping position throughout the course of a night, this style of memory foam mattress could promote really restful sleep for you. How firm is the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress?

Dillon Payne/CNET

We have the Level 2 version of this bed in the Medium-Firm firmness profile, and we’d consider it to be right in between a medium and a medium-firm on our scale. This firmness level is most accommodating to support the needs of back, stomach and certain combination sleepers.

If you’re more of a primary side sleeper looking for a pressure-relieving style of bed, this version of the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid might not be best for you. Luckily, it’s available in some other softer firmness levels that should help accommodate side sleepers a bit more.

For years, we’ve ranked mattress firmness from a subjective perspective, but we now have a machine called the Mattress Smasher 9000 that objectively tests how soft or firm a mattress is. After pressing into the bed with a precise pressure gauge, it gave the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid a score of 7.2 out of 10 — pretty aligned with our current thoughts on the bed’s firmness.

Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress construction

Dillon Payne/CNET

This is a premium hybrid bed made with high-quality comfort elements. It’s around 14 inches thick and made up of the following materials:

  1. On the bottom, it starts off with a thin layer of base foam topped with the bed’s main support system of foam-encased coils. These coils are laid out in five separate support zones to help with proper spinal alignment.
  2. Then you’ve got a memory foam that acts as a transition layer between the coils, so you don’t feel them as much.
  3. Above that, you’ve got a layer of micro coils to act as an additional support and transition layer.
  4. Then the bed has contouring gel memory foam layers to provide the bed with its dense memory foam feel.
  5. Wrapping the mattress up is this hypnotic-looking cover with this flowery design. It’s designed to help disperse heat more than your average bed cover — we didn’t notice much, if any, of its effects.

Serta Perfect Sleeper X mattress performance

Motion isolation

Since this is a premium, dense memory foam option, it naturally deadens cross-mattress motion quite well. Memory foam is probably one of the best materials for absorbing motion, so it’s easy to see why the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid performs so great in this regard. If you sleep with someone who’s an especially light sleeper, I doubt you’ll be jostling them awake any time soon on this particular mattress.

Edge-to-edge support

Since the coils in this bed are encased in a foam border, that should definitely help strengthen this bed’s edges. Based on my edge support tests, I felt plenty of support along the perimeter, even after applying my full weight to it. If you or your partner like to hug the edges of a bed at night, willingly or otherwise, you shouldn’t experience much of a roll-off sensation with the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid.

Temperature

Even though the fancy pattern on this cover is advertised to help keep you sleeping cool on the mattress, we didn’t observe it to have much of a cooling effect at all. That being said, I can’t imagine anyone really warming up excessively on this bed, either. It should range around a temperature-neutral sweet spot for most couples. If you’re looking for a mattress to help keep you and your partner sleeping cool, you can always check out our best cooling mattress for hot sleepers list.

Durability

Since this is a premium hybrid bed with those Zoned-support coils, we’d say that it should prove to be much more durable than your standard, all-foam mattress found online. Its steel coils should provide lots of support and durability for all body types: small, medium and even larger people. If you’re a much heavier person who’s upward of 300 pounds, you may require more of an ultra-durable style of hybrid bed. In that case, feel free to check out our best beds for heavy people list.

Who is the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress best for?

Dillon Payne/CNET

While the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid could work for a variety of sleeper types, it’s not going to be the bed of everyone’s dreams. Here’s who we think will get the most out of this mattress.

Sleeping position

This version of the Serta Perfect Sleeper X will likely work best for the support needs of primary back and stomach sleepers. Combination sleepers who like to rotate around a night will also find the bed accommodating to their preferences. If you’re a strict side sleeper who wants tons of cushion for your shoulders and hips, this isn’t the best choice for that — I’d consider one of the softer firmness profiles.

Additionally, you should know you like memory foam beds before going with this mattress. If you want a mattress with a dense memory foam feel, similar to a Tempur-Pedic, you’ll likely enjoy this option. However, if you’re searching for something with a generally accommodating feel, it could be worth looking into something more neutral instead.

Body type

The construction of this bed makes it best at supporting all body types, including heavier people. If you’re an average-size person or even someone who’s on the smaller side, you should too find it supportive, but you could save more money by going the route of an all-foam bed.

Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress pricing

Size Measurements (inches) Price
Twin XL 38×80 inches $1,699
Full 54×75 inches $1,849
Queen 60×80 inches $1,999
King 76×80 inches $2,599
Cal King 72×84 inches $2,599

Speaking price, this is a more premium bed from Serta and its price tag certainly reflects that. Compared with more affordable options from the brand like the Serta Classic, this mattress is pretty expensive. Keep in mind, you’re spending up for a premium memory foam bed with a targeted Zoned-support system, so it could be worth it for some.

Trial, shipping and warranty

Dillon Payne/CNET

Serta backs its mattresses with some nice policies. Its beds ship to you for free, and once the bed is in your possession, you get a 120-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like your Serta mattress within that time frame, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a 10-year warranty.

How does the Layla mattress compare to other mattresses?

Serta Perfect Sleeper X vs. Serta Classic

There’s a lot to unpack regarding two of Serta’s most popular mattresses. Both are hybrid options that have noticeable Zoned-Support features to help keep your back more aligned at night than your average bed. Each is also available in a few different firmness choices, but the biggest differences between them have to do with feel and pricing. The Classic presents sleepers with a neutral firmness and feel, while the Perfect Sleeper X has more of a dense memory foam quality. With the Classic, you’ll be saving a lot more money compared with the premium-tier pricing of the Perfect Sleeper X. All in all, both are still great considerations that you can even try out in a store before you buy — who doesn’t love that?

Serta Perfect Sleeper X vs. Saatva Contour5

This comparison is a bit more tricky to make since these two beds are pretty similar. Both are dense memory foam options that are constructed with a more premium design. Both have Zoned-support features to help with nightly back pain, but on the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid, it’s found in the coils — the Contour5 is an all-foam mattress. One noticeable difference also comes down to pricing. The Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid is much more affordable than the Contour5, by about a thousand dollars, in fact. With the Contour5, however, you do get complimentary white glove delivery and a full-year trial period — who doesn’t love that?

The final verdict

,Listen, premium memory foam beds can get really expensive, but if you’re working with a budget of around $2,000 and you want a dense memory foam mattress with a targeted hybrid construction that’s available in a few different comfort options, this could be the right mattress for you. Just be wary of that cooling cover that isn’t so — it’s pretty much just an optical illusion.

You might like the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid mattress if:

  • You want a supportive hybrid mattress
  • You want a bed with noticeable Zoned Support
  • You want bed with some firmness choices
  • You like want a dense memory foam mattress

You might not like the Serta Classic mattress if:

  • You’re looking for an all-foam mattress
  • You prefer the feel of a more neutral bed
  • You want an active-cooling mattress
  • You want something more affordable

Based on its targeted, Zoned-support design and my experience with lying on it, I’d say so. Compared with your average hybrid mattress, I think this bed has a lot more going on when it comes to something that helps mitigate chronic back pain. When I lie down on this bed, I can actually feel the center third propping up against the small of my back, which to me is a clear indication of the bed’s enhanced design.

In my honest opinion, yes. Serta is one of the most longstanding mattress companies in existence, having been founded in 1931. Considering the brand’s overall longevity alone, I would trust Serta reputability. I actually slept on a Serta mattress that I bought in a store for many years — that was before having this dream job, no pun intended there.

Generally speaking, the average lifespan of a bed is between seven to 10 years. However, in the case of the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid, since this is a more enhanced hybrid mattress with a targeted design, I’d expect it to last much longer. Depending on your body type, this bed should last most sleepers for several years to come.
