Motorola’s 188g Lightweight Foldable “razr 60” — IP48 Water and Dust Resistance Boosts Practicality — BigGo Finance

Motorola has launched the foldable smartphone “razr 60.” When unfolded, it measures about 7.25mm thick and weighs about 188g, keeping it under 190g for easy one-handed use. It carries an IP48 water and dust resistance rating. The main display is a 6.9-inch pOLED with up to 120Hz refresh and 3,000-nit peak brightness, while the cover display is a 3.6-inch panel at 90Hz and 1,700 nits. The back comes in three colors, with the white version using an acetate material. Motorola is also offering the slab-style “Motorola Edge 70 Max,” which packs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and a 7,100mAh battery for under $1,000 (about 160,000 yen) to take on premium models. The company is targeting different customer segments across price tiers with both its foldable and slab-style lineups.
Key Elements

Motorola has brought its latest foldable smartphone, the “razr 60,” to market. Since launching the China-market “razr 2022” in 2022, the company has continuously released flip-style models, and this latest device is positioned as a staple model in that lineage.

The body measures approximately 73.99 x 171.30 x 7.25mm when unfolded and about 73.99 x 88.08 x 15.85mm when folded. It weighs about 188g, with actual measurement at 188.7g (without SIM or microSD card installed). With smartphones in recent years typically exceeding 200g, keeping the device under 190g directly translates into easier one-handed operation. The size that fits in the palm of a hand when closed is another advantage unique to the flip style.

The color lineup consists of three options: Gibraltar Sea Navy, Light Sky White, and Parfait Pink. The Light Sky White test unit uses an acetate material on the back, offering a soft texture and premium feel similar to that used in eyeglass frames. The other two colors use a leather-like material, giving buyers a choice in texture as well.

Despite being a foldable, it supports IP48 water and dust resistance. The main display is a 6.9-inch (2640 x 1080 dot) pOLED with 3,000-nit peak brightness and up to 120Hz refresh rate. The 22:9 tall aspect ratio makes it easier to take in more information when browsing the web, using social media, or messaging. The cover display is a 3.6-inch (1056 x 1066 dot) Flexible AMOLED with 90Hz drive and 1,700-nit peak brightness.

The cover display still has some drawbacks — apps with narrow display areas due to aspect ratio constraints and text input can be awkward — but it is at a level where checking email, maps, and watching videos pose no problem. Since it can be operated while folded, it saves the trouble of opening the device each time.

Alongside its foldables, Motorola has also introduced a new slab-style model, the “Motorola Edge 70 Max.” It combines an aircraft-grade aluminum and glass chassis with a 6.82-inch display, priced under $1,000 (about 160,000 yen). In real-world use, brightness reaches up to 1,345 cd/m², and while there is slight color shift in whites and pale grays, color reproduction is generally rated as good.

The camera setup consists of a main camera with Sony’s Lytia 710 sensor and an ultrawide lens, delivering sufficient image quality for everyday shooting, though zoom performance falls short of premium models. On the performance side, it is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, supporting 4K-resolution game rendering and showing no limits even with demanding apps. The 7,100mAh battery is packed into a relatively slim chassis, recording just under 28 hours of continuous Wi-Fi use. If screen-on time is kept in check, it would last more than two days even with heavy use.

For foldables, balancing larger screens with portability is a challenge, but the razr 60 has raised its level of completion through weight and water/dust resistance practicality. The slab-style Edge 70 Max competes with premium models on price and battery life. Motorola is poised to appeal to different customer segments across price tiers with both its foldable and slab-style lineups.

Competition in the foldable smartphone market continues. In addition to hinge structures and thinner designs, everyday-use metrics such as water and dust resistance and weight reduction are increasingly influencing purchase decisions, putting each company’s design philosophy to the test.
