Their capabilities vary as you encounter more advanced models, though. The recently released AirPods Pro 3 are defined by their in-ear heart rate monitoring and exceptional noise cancellation, while the basic AirPods 4 are best for baseline features like accessing Siri and listening to music.
The current AirPods lineup includes the premium over-ear AirPods Max, the in-ear AirPods Pro 3, and budget in-ear options, such as the AirPods 4. I’ve tested every AirPods model and have strong opinions on which pairs are the best for specific use cases. Here’s what you should know before making a purchase.
What are the best AirPods right now?
After thoroughly testing all of Apple’s AirPods, we’ve concluded that the best AirPods are the AirPods Pro 3, thanks to their updated advanced software features, new health-tracking features, outstanding noise cancellation, and superior transparency mode.
Our second choice is the premium, over-ear AirPods Max, which are well-received for their incredibly stylish design, excellent sound quality, and ecosystem compatibility. The AirPods Max don’t have as many software features as their in-ear counterparts, but they’re a suitable choice for Apple users seeking over-ear headphones that seamlessly integrate into the Apple ecosystem.
The best AirPods of 2025
Why we like them: The AirPods Pro 3 are Apple’s most advanced headphones, offering hearing health features, in-ear heart rate monitoring, effective active and adaptive noise cancellation, and Apple’s superb transparency mode. The AirPods Pro 3’s new earbud and eartip design should help most people achieve a better seal, resulting in improved sound immersion and noise-canceling performance.

The AirPods Pro 3’s noise cancellation is tangibly improved over its predecessor, although Bose’s noise cancellation still has an edge at canceling lower frequencies. Additionally, the earbuds’ heart rate sensor and upgrades to the iOS Fitness app make the Pro 3 more than simply a vessel for canceling noise and playing music — they’re a true companion to your iPhone and can offer more value to your everyday needs.
Who they’re for: These AirPods are ideal for iOS users looking for a small, easily pocketable pair of AirPods with advanced, “pro”-level features. The AirPods Pro 3 are ideal for individuals who prefer earbuds instead of over-ear headphones and desire a more discreet option for everyday use.
The AirPods Pro 2 feature an IP57 rating, making them more resistant to dust, sweat, and water than the AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C). The stronger water resistance makes the AirPods and their charging case virtually waterproof — both can survive water immersion up to three feet for up to 30 minutes. I don’t recommend intentionally dunking your AirPods, but if an accident happens, they should be fine.
Working professionals, frequent flyers, and people on the move can appreciate the Pro 3’s compatibility with their iPhone, which enables them to control Siri, make and receive phone calls, and add events to their calendars hands-free.
Who should look elsewhere: Although the AirPods Pro 3 are our favorite AirPods for their versatility and performance, consider the AirPods 4 if the Pro 3 are too advanced for your needs, or if you prefer a more traditional fit. If you’re looking for over-ear headphones that serve as an auditory companion to your Apple devices, consider the AirPods Max.
The only major software upgrade the Pro 3 has over the Pro 2 is the addition of heart rate tracking. The AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4 all utilize Apple’s H2 chip, which enables all earbuds to feature Live Translation, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Mode, and more.
Like all AirPods, you should consider other headphones and earbuds if you have an Android smartphone or tablet, or a Windows or ChromeOS laptop. You’ll overpay for these earbuds and miss out on their best features, should you pair them with a non-Apple device.

Who they’re for: These headphones are ideal for people with at least one (likely an iPhone) Apple device, as features like spatial audio, automatic device switching, and Find My are reserved for Apple users. I don’t recommend Android users spend near $600 to not access the Max’s most valued features.
For iOS users deciding between the AirPods Max and Apple’s earbuds, the AirPods Max are the best choice for commuting, desk working, studying, and traveling. Their over-ear form factor provides a more immersive audio and noise-canceling experience. Additionally, their over-ear form factor won’t be as fatiguing to your ears as in-ear earbuds.
Who should look elsewhere: I do not recommend Android users pay the AirPods Max’s hefty price tag, as they work best with Apple devices. I recommend the AirPods Max most to people with at least one other Apple device, such as a MacBook or iPad, in addition to their iPhone.
The AirPods Max lack some now-commonplace software features, such as Conversation Awareness and Adaptive Noise Cancellation, and have a shorter battery life than their direct competitors. The AirPods Max aren’t the most advanced over-ear headphones, given that they’re five years old.
If you’re looking for headphones with more intuitive microphone voice pickup, advanced noise cancellation algorithms, high-quality Bluetooth codecs, and comprehensive software features, consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 or the Sony WH-1000XM6.

Why we like them: The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) are Apple’s upper midrange AirPods. We like these earbuds because they offer the best features of AirPods at a lower price. The AirPods 4 feature Transparency mode, Adaptive Noise Cancellation, and Spatial Audio, making them the ideal AirPods for casual, everyday use.
The AirPods 4 with ANC are more advanced than the model without it, but less advanced than the AirPods Pro 3. Still, this model sports Apple’s H2 chip, which allows for advanced software features, including Live Translation.

Who they’re for: The AirPods 4 with noise cancellation are best suited for iOS users who want Apple’s best earbud features without the in-ear fit that the AirPods Pro 3 provide. The AirPods 4 feature an in-ear fit, allowing more ambient noise to enter your ear and providing a comfortable fit. Still, the AirPods 4 are excellent for making and taking casual phone calls on the go, and they have enough water resistance (IP54) to accompany you to your after-work workout.
They’re ideal for people who want a relaxed fit and some advanced software features, but don’t need ultra-strong noise cancellation, in-ear heart rate monitoring, or hearing aid performance.
Who should look elsewhere: You should not purchase the AirPods 4 if the traditional plastic AirPods tend to fall out of your ears. Unlike the AirPods Pro 3, the AirPods 4 do not have silicone tips to help keep the earbuds in place. Otherwise, the AirPods 4 with noise cancellation offer many of the same advanced software features as their more expensive counterpart, making them a great option for iOS users who don’t want to pay a premium for the Pro model.

In evaluating the four models of AirPods, I’ve especially focused on these four factors:
- Cost: Budget is where most people start, so we always have to keep that at the forefront of the conversation about AirPods. The AirPods on this list cost anywhere from $99 to $550, depending on the model you choose. The AirPods Max are the most expensive AirPods, while the AirPods 4 without ANC are the cheapest. The AirPods Max are made with heavier metals like aluminum and stainless steel, adding to their price, while the AirPods 4 are mainly plastic.
- Features: The things that determine how AirPods work and what you can do with them are always going to be at the center of consideration, so we have to look at noise cancellation, transparency mode, spatial audio, water resistance, charging case, interface controls, comfort, and other key features.
- Battery life: Few things affect daily use more than battery life, so we have to take that into account when considering the usefulness of each product. Apple’s earbuds offer five to six hours of battery on a single charge, but the charging case provides up to 25 more hours of playtime.
- Chip: Apple uses both the H1 and H2 chips to power its AirPods. These chips are key to sound quality, noise-canceling abilities, and software features. The AirPods Max have the H1 chip, so they lack adaptive noise cancellation and Conversation Awareness. However, Apple’s earbuds sport the H2 chip, which powers those features.
I have been using AirPods every day for over five years, and have tried all of the various models. I’ve also used many other wireless earbuds, wireless over-the-ear headphones, and wired earbuds and headphones. I’ve used inexpensive $20 models and I’ve used ones that cost over $500. I’ve taken all of that experience and used it to make recommendations on the best AirPods to buy, based on the AirPods’ performance, battery life, customer reviews, your needs, your use cases, and your budget.

If you want AirPods that will receive the latest and greatest software features, the AirPods Pro 3 are a no-brainer. Apple always sells its products for their MSRP. If you buy from Apple’s website, expect to pay full price. However, you can often find Apple products, such as AirPods, regularly discounted on sites like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. During seasonal sales, you can find the AirPods Pro 2 for as low as $170 and the AirPods Max for as low as $395, and the AirPods 4 without noise cancellation for as low as $100.
