Apple's WatchOS 11.3 clobbers updates for older Apple Watches

ZDNET

Apple’s latest version of WatchOS has impacted older watches, preventing them from being updated. As described by a user posting on X (and spotted by MacRumors), Apple Watches confined to WatchOS 10 can no longer move to WatchOS 10.6.1, the latest update for that version.

Apple Watch models affected

The bug affects the Apple Watch Series 4, 5, and SE 1. Those models aren’t supported by WatchOS 11, which is why they’re still on version 10. But if the watch is running a version prior to WatchOS 10.6.1, it can’t be updated at all. Watches already running 10.6.1 are not affected by the problem, nor are watches supported by WatchOS 11.

Beyond the update problem, some Apple Watches running earlier versions of WatchOS 10 can no longer pair with an iPhone. These glitches apparently occurred because Apple accidentally changed the over-the-air update requirements for pre-WatchOS 11 devices. For now, anyone affected by the issue will have to stick with their current WatchOS version and wait for Apple to roll out a patch.

New Apple Watch face

On a more positive note, WatchOS 11.3 has added a Unity Rhythm face to honor Black History Month.

Using custom lettering to write the word “Unity,” the new watch face displays numbers created using intertwined strands of red, green, and yellow. The Unity face also taps into the watch’s gyroscope so that when you raise your wrist, the strands transform from abstract brush strokes into digits.
