ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • Spotify is rolling out a new Prompted Playlist feature.
  • It’ll help you create a playlist by describing the vibe you’re looking for.
  • It is now available in beta for Premium users in the US and Canada.

Spotify is making it easier to build your perfect playlist for every occasion. The company is rolling out a new feature called Prompted Playlist, which it says puts “meaningful control of the algorithm directly in your hands, with your ideas, your logic, and your creativity.” The feature is available now in beta for Premium users in the US and Canada.

The Prompted Playlist feature enables you to describe, via a prompt, what you want to hear, and Spotify takes it from there. The feature uses your description, listening history, and current trends in music and culture to curate the vibe you’re looking for.

Also: Spotify got another price increase, but I found a cheaper alternative (with the same Premium benefits)

The new Spotify feature allows you to create playlists with a refresh to your Discovery Weekly, discover fresher tracks and emerging artists, and include or exclude specific genres according to your taste. A Prompted Playlist can be set to refresh daily or weekly, so your playlist always has new music.

The new Prompted Playlist feature can be found inside the Create menu:

  • Open Spotify and tap Create in the lower-right corner.
  • Tap on Prompted Playlist.
  • Describe what you want to hear. You can go for a specific vibe, scenario, or mood. This prompt can be edited or deleted to start afresh.
  • You can also tap on Ideas to find example prompts created by Spotify’s music editors and culture experts.
  • Once created, you can share this Prompted Playlist with your friends and family.

The music streaming service shared a few prompts like, “A Discover Weekly-style playlist, but only hip hop from the last 30 days,” and “What are the first tracks I ever listened to on Spotify? Order them from the very first track I ever streamed — with date and time — and keep going.”

I like to listen to a particular kind of music depending on what I’m doing, and Prompted Playlist sounds like a fun capability that I want to try. I’d love to discover more Bollywood dance tunes for an upcoming wedding. I’d also like to make a playlist of soothing music to help me fall asleep quickly. If the feature works as stated, I might finally use an AI-enabled tool on a day-to-day basis.
