Behold! The iPhone Air (Image credit: Future/Lance Ulanoff)

  • A thinner, brighter display is rumored for the iPhone Air 2
  • We might also see a larger battery on the device
  • The phone is predicted to appear sometime during 2027

The iPhone Air is certainly a good-looking smartphone, but the rumor is that it’s not been selling all that well for Apple. Now a new batch of leaks points towards the upgrades we might see on the iPhone Air 2 model, due sometime in 2027.

These leaks come from The Elec (via 9to5Google), and start with a prediction that the iPhone Air 2 will use CoE (Color filter on Encapsulation) tech in its display. That’s the same tech planned for the foldable iPhone, and crucially, it would mean a brightness upgrade.

That’s not all: the brighter display could also be thinner, and that means more room for a bigger battery for the iPhone Air 2. In our iPhone Air review we described battery life as “solid”, so improvements in this area would certainly be welcome.

If Apple is able to make the screen panel thinner, it could also make the phone as a whole thinner, rather than making the battery bigger – but considering the iPhone Air is already a mere 5.6 mm front to back (beating the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge), an increase in battery size and capacity might be a better idea.

Another camera too

The other major bugbear that people seem to have with the iPhone Air is that there’s only a single rear camera. We’ve already seen rumors that Apple is going to address this with the next model by adding a second camera with an ultra-wide lens.

Better battery life and improved cameras would go a long way to addressing the most notable shortcomings of the iPhone Air, though in the interests of balance we should point out that the handset definitely has its fans too.

There have been reports that Samsung has abandoned plans to launch a Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge after poor sales of the current Edge model – suggesting that consumer demand for super-thin phones is pretty soft.

Nevertheless, Apple appears to be committed to at least one more iPhone Air model. We may have to wait until 2027 to see it, however: the talk is that Apple is planning a launch schedule shake-up this year, with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max appearing in 2026, and the iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 waiting until 2027.
