People often criticize Samsung for not bringing enough new tech and innovation to its devices, but the truth is, many parts of the company are always testing out new ideas and technologies. In fact, Samsung likely files more patents than any other smartphone maker out there. Of course, not every patent ends up in a real product—that’s just how it goes. Recently, the company filed a new patent for something interesting: a smartphone camera system that can be repositioned.

Samsung gets approval for a patent describing repositionable camera system

Samsung had filed a patent on the US Designs IP Portal a long ago, on January 10th, 2022. The company recently received the approval for the same under the code D1066344 (spotted by MySmartPrice). The patent describes the repositionable camera system for mobile phones. Samsung has been researching and experimenting with similar design for several years now and they’ve been working on this type of repositionable camera system since 2019.

The patent shows a mobile device with a single camera that can move around based on what the user needs. This repositionable camera system lets you place the camera on either the front or back of the device. That means the same camera sensor can be used for both selfies and regular rear photos, removing the need for a separate front-facing camera. Smartphone cameras have gotten really advanced these days, but selfies often don’t get the same attention because most devices still use lower-quality lenses for the front camera. This patent could finally fix that problem.

Looking at the sketches in the patent, it’s clear that this repositionable camera system is designed with foldable and rollable screen devices in mind. It’s a really clever idea and could definitely improve smartphone camera systems if it ever becomes a reality. That said, it’s still just a patent for now, and the chances of it actually making it to the market are pretty slim. Still, it’s an interesting glimpse into what the future of smartphone cameras could look like.
