Google is making it easier for Android users to download apps from stores other than the Google Play Store. The company has started accepting applications for its new Registered App Stores programme. Under this programme, eligible third-party app stores will get features that make downloading and updating apps easier.
The programme will be available in several countries outside the US. Google plans to roll out support from December 1, 2026, but users will need a compatible version of Android to access the new features.
Currently, downloading an app from outside the Google Play Store can involve extra steps. Users may have to give additional permissions and confirm the installation before they can use an app. Google wants to make this process simpler for approved app stores. Users will be able to install apps with fewer steps, while app updates can happen in the background.
This does not mean Google Play Store is going away. Users will still be able to download apps from Google’s store, along with other approved stores.
Not every app store will be allowed to join the programme. Google has set rules that stores must follow before they can get approval. They will have to protect intellectual property, remove illegal content and publish privacy policies for users and developers.
Google will also check the security measures used by these stores to reduce the risk of harmful apps reaching Android phones.
As part of the application process, companies must submit documents in English explaining how they follow the rules. They will also have to upload copies of all their apps for review. Google may charge extra fees if it finds problems related to malware.
Companies that want to join the programme will have to pay an annual fee of $10,000 (around ₹9.5 lakh) before Google reviews their applications. Google says the fee will help cover the cost of running the programme and providing support to app stores.
Google plans to launch the programme on December 1, 2026, in dozens of countries. However, the new features will work only on supported phones running Android 17 QPR2 or a newer compatible version.
Android 17 QPR2 is expected to reach Pixel phones in the coming weeks. Other Android phones may receive the update later.
