Google has announced two new updates for Google for Education, introducing a faster way to publish Gemini-built interactive apps to Google Sites and new insight summaries for teachers using Gemini Notebook in Google Classroom.

The updates, published by the Google Workspace team on 19 October, are aimed at making it easier for educators to share AI-powered resources and better understand how students are using them.

The first update allows users to export interactive apps built in the Gemini app directly to Google Sites. Rather than copying and pasting code and manually embedding it into a site, users can now choose Export > Google Sites and send the app straight into a new private site draft.

Google said the change is designed to make it easier to share interactive tools with teams, customers or students, without needing to rebuild the experience elsewhere. Once exported, the app remains interactive inside Google Sites and can be customised further before publication.

The feature is available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google account holders who already have access to the Gemini app. It is now live across web, Android and iOS.

The second update is focused on schools and colleges using teacher-led Gemini Notebook in Google Classroom. Google has introduced new AI-powered insight summaries for educators, giving teachers a clearer picture of how students are engaging with assigned notebooks.

Teachers can now view an overall summary of student engagement, along with common themes from student interactions such as recurring questions, areas of strength and suggested areas for support. They can also review individual student chat transcripts for added context and to check the accuracy of the AI-generated insights.

Google said the feature is intended to help teachers gauge instructional value and use student activity to inform lesson planning.

This functionality only applies to Gemini Notebooks assigned through Google Classroom. Students will also see a notification making clear that their conversations in assigned notebooks are visible to their teacher.

Alongside the new summaries, Google Workspace administrators can now manage external sharing for Gemini Notebook with more granular controls in the Admin console, including the use of trusted domains. This means schools can support notebook sharing across different domains where those domains have been approved by administrators.

For example, teachers and students in separate trusted domains can now create and assign notebooks to one another, provided sharing with trusted domains has been enabled.

Google said teachers must be in an organisational unit or group with Gemini Notebook switched on in order to create and assign notebooks and view the new insights. Students must also have Gemini Notebook enabled in order to interact with assigned notebooks.

Insight summaries are rolling out now to Google Workspace for Education users, while the updated external sharing controls are already available. Google said the insights feature is available for Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus editions, with support for Gemini LTI users expected in the coming weeks.

Together, the two updates show Google continuing to build out Gemini’s role in education, both in content creation and in classroom visibility. For educators already experimenting with Gemini-powered resources, the changes could make it easier to publish classroom tools and track how students are using them.
