Motorola aims to prove with the Edge 70 Max that you don’t necessarily have to spend over US$ 1,000 on a great smartphone. It takes on the biggest players in terms of performance, display and, above all, battery life, and even comes out ahead in some areas.
Motorola has some interesting phones in its lineup, such as the foldable Razr series or the Signature with top-tier technology.
But the new Motorola Edge 70 Max is a particularly appealing addition: A phone priced well below US$ 1,000 that barely falls short of much more expensive phones.
What’s more, its price has already dropped significantly in online stores just a few weeks after launch.
Motorola phone with an aluminum chassis
Let’s take a closer look at Motorola’s latest smartphone: The Edge 70 Max offers a 6.82-inch screen in a very stylish chassis made of aircraft-grade aluminum and glass.
The bezels around the screen are barely visible, and the display itself can get very bright in everyday use, reaching up to 1,345 cd/m². While our testing reveals slight color inaccuracies in whites and light grays, color reproduction is otherwise good.
Flagship killer with a great main camera
For cameras, you have to make do with a capable main camera and a wide-angle lens, but the main camera in particular, with its Sony Lytia 710 sensor, takes very nice photos in everyday use. Only its zoom capabilities are limited compared to top-tier models.
You also have to make a few compromises in performance, although the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is still a very fast SoC that can even render games at 4K resolution and does not reach its limits even with demanding apps. In everyday use, you are therefore unlikely to notice much difference compared to the fastest phones on the market.
Very long battery life on the Edge smartphone
The battery Motorola has fitted poses a threat to top-tier models: 7,100 mAh in a relatively slim chassis that is not too heavy.
This allows the Motorola phone to achieve just under 28 hours of battery life in our Wi-Fi test. In everyday use, where you also switch the phone off occasionally, that easily translates into two days of heavy use, and even longer with a little less screen time.
