HONOR Robot Phone: Robot Smartphone with ARRI Gimbal Launches in China

2

The HONOR Robot Phone is here: Since August 12, HONOR has been accepting pre-orders in China for what it claims is the first smartphone with a fully motorized, mechanical gimbal; the official launch is set for August 18, 2026. What makes it special is a fold-out 4DoF gimbal arm that supports the 200-MP main camera and, thanks to a partnership with cinema camera manufacturer ARRI, is designed to deliver cinematic image quality directly to the smartphone.

Key Points at a Glance

  • With the Robot Phone, HONOR is launching the world’s first smartphone with a fully integrated, mechanical 4DoF gimbal.
  • It goes on sale August 18, 2026, in China, priced at 9,999 yuan (about 1,280 euros) for the 12/512 GB model and 12,999 yuan (approximately 1,670 euros) for the 16 GB/1 TB model.
  • In collaboration with ARRI, HONOR integrates color science from the world of cinema: ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3, and ARRI Looks in real time.
  • YOYO Robot Mode transforms the phone into a hands-free camera crew using AI object tracking and gesture control, but will remain exclusive to China for now.
  • It remains to be seen if and when the device will be available in Germany. However, the partnership with ARRI is set to continue with the HONOR Magic9 series.

The 4DoF Titanium Agile Gimbal: The Heart of the Robot Phone

Instead of simply mounting a camera in a notch or island, HONOR has mounted it on a fold-out arm with four degrees of freedom. According to the manufacturer, the so-called Titanium Agile Gimbal consists of more than 100 precision components, covered by over 100 patents, and undergoes 60 individual manufacturing steps. Compared to traditional external gimbal attachments, the system is said to be 65 percent smaller while operating 200 percent more stably.

This is made possible, among other things, by a titanium gimbal motor weighing just 2.6 grams, which achieves pan speeds of up to 360 degrees per second, combined with a HONOR Super Steel Flip motor with a torque density of 120 N·m per liter. In initial hands-on reports from Gizmochina, object tracking is described as “exceptionally fast and precise,” and a transparent protective cover is designed to shield the sensitive mechanics from dust and minor impacts. However, this does not completely dispel doubts about its long-term durability: a fall while the arm is extended is likely to be more costly than with a traditional camera module.

ARRI and HONOR: Cinematic Visuals in Pocket Size

The Robot Phone is the first visible milestone of the previously announced partnership between HONOR and ARRI, the manufacturer of professional cinema cameras. Instead of simple filters, genuine components of ARRI Image Science are integrated into the smartphone: ARRI LogC3 as the color space for recording, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 for a broader color gamut, and several ARRI Looks that can be previewed in real time.

Technically, HONOR’s in-house HONOR H1 image processor first processes the video signal internally at 14 bits in 4:4:4, reduces noise even at the RAW stage, and ultimately outputs 10-bit footage in LogC3 and 4:2:2. HONOR cites an improved signal-to-noise ratio of 8 dB for the AI-powered noise reduction, as well as a dynamic range of up to 14 f-stops achieved through dynamic AI range optimization. The footage can be imported directly into DaVinci Resolve, where appropriate ARRI LUTs are available for color correction. This is intended to preserve significantly more image information for post-production than compressed smartphone videos typically allow.

More Information

James Li, CEO of HONOR, describes the approach in the announcement as follows: A century of cinematic art has shown just how powerful precise control over light, shadow, and color is for storytelling, and it is precisely this experience that the company aims to bring to smartphones in collaboration with ARRI. ARRI Product Manager David Bermbach adds that in the future, it will no longer be just about more pixels, but about control over the image.

Camera and Technical Specifications at a Glance

YOYO Robot Mode: Physical AI and Hands-Free Filming

On the software side, MagicOS introduces the new YOYO Robot Mode, which, according to HONOR, combines multimodal perception, gesture recognition, and the physical movement of the gimbal. Using voice source localization and AI object tracking, the camera automatically pans and tilts so that users stay in frame during vlogs, livestreams, or video calls, even when they’re moving. Using touchless gestures, users can extend the arm and press the shutter button without even touching the device. Cinematic motion modes such as Tilt Lock, First Person View, and AI SpinShot round out the features for smoother handheld camera movements.

YOYO Auto Execution goes one step further and, as a system AI agent, is designed to autonomously complete multi-step tasks across multiple apps and system settings—according to hands-on reports, sometimes involving over 100 steps—based on Alibaba’s Qwen language model. In return, buyers receive lifetime free access to the YOYO AI Membership SVIP tier. One downside remains: These AI features are currently limited to China, and HONOR has not announced a global version of the first generation.

Price and Availability: Is the Robot Phone Coming to Germany, Too?

Pre-orders began in China on August 12 at 8:30 p.m. local time, and regular sales there will start on August 18 at 10:08 a.m. The two storage variants cost 9,999 and 12,999 yuan, respectively—roughly 1,280 and 1,670 euros—though this conversion, which excludes European taxes and import surcharges, is for general reference only. To mark the launch, there’s also an accessory bundle that includes a magnetic stand, a lanyard, and a 120-watt charger.

There has been no official announcement for Germany or Europe yet. HONOR itself refers only to a “global tour,” which has already taken the device to MWC 2026, the China Night at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Shanghai International Film Festival. Whether this will lead to an international launch remains to be seen.

Assessment: Creative tool or expensive niche product?

A smartphone with a built-in gimbal isn’t an entirely new idea. As early as 2019, OnePlus experimented with a retractable, rotating camera in the Concept One, though it never made it to mass production. HONOR is now taking the concept much further and positioning the Robot Phone almost as a competitor to external gimbal cameras like the DJI Pocket 3—only built directly into the device itself. Based on initial impressions from international tech media outlets like Android Central, HONOR has indeed succeeded in creating a device that redefines the category.

Whether the premium price compared to a traditional flagship is worth it for most buyers is another question. An additional moving mechanism inside the body means more parts that can break—and a thicker, heavier device for everyday use. For those who regularly shoot vlogs, do livestreams, or want to use ARRI color science without additional equipment, this is a unique tool.

Conclusion

With the HONOR Robot Phone, the manufacturer is launching a true niche product that’s nonetheless technically impressive: a mechanical 4DoF gimbal, genuine ARRI color science, and AI control that turns the smartphone into a hands-free camera crew. For now, the German market will have to wait and see, as neither the price nor the launch date for Europe has been set. It will still be exciting to see how much of the technology showcased here will be incorporated into the upcoming Magic9 series, which HONOR and ARRI have already announced as their next joint venture.
